Is It Fatigue or Pain? Here’s How to Tell Mid-Season
Jun 02, 2025If you’re like most athletes right now, you’re starting to feel it. The grind of the season is real. You wake up sore, it takes longer to get loose, and by the end of practice, you’re wondering if your body’s just tired or if something more serious is going on.
This is one of the most common questions I get in the middle of the season:
“How do I know if what I’m feeling is fatigue or actual pain?”
Let’s walk through it together.
What Fatigue Feels Like
Fatigue is more of a whole-body experience. Your legs, arms, maybe even your core feel sore, but it’s not sharp or isolated. It feels like you need time to get moving, but once you do, you loosen up.
Here’s what to look for:
-
The soreness goes away as you warm up
-
Your muscles feel full or heavy, but not sharp
-
You feel better the more you move
That’s normal mid-season wear. If this sounds like you, it might be time to dial in your recovery: sleep, hydration, nutrition, and maybe adjust your volume or intensity a bit.
What Pain Feels Like
Pain is different. It’s sharp, specific, and doesn’t go away when you start moving.
Signs you’re dealing with pain:
-
You can point to one exact spot that hurts (shoulder, elbow, knee, etc.)
-
Movement doesn’t help — it might make it worse
-
The discomfort lingers throughout the day
-
It flares up during certain movements (like throwing)
If you’re pointing to one exact spot and saying, “It’s always here,” that’s pain — and that’s your cue to get checked out.
Why It Matters
Pushing through fatigue is part of the game. Pushing through pain? That’s where problems happen. Pain doesn’t go away on its own. Your body needs help to heal, and we need to figure out what caused it in the first place.
We see this all the time: guys ignore the early signs, thinking it’s just soreness. A week or two later, they’re shut down completely.
