The Importance of Offseason Recovery for Athletes
Jul 28, 2025As the baseball season winds down, I always get the same question:
"What should I do now that the season is over?"
Totally fair question. The competitive grind has wrapped up, and a lot of athletes immediately start thinking about next season. The drive to keep improving is awesome –but let me be straight with you:
Sometimes the best next step is to do . . . nothing.
Yeah, I said it. If you're feeling beat up, mentally fried, or like you're just "going through the motions" with your coach or in the weight room – then it's probably time for a full reset.
Offseason Recovery Isn’t Lazy. It’s Smart.
After a full season of practices, games, travel, and training, your body and your mind need time to recharge. That’s not weakness — that’s strategy. A little mental and physical rest after baseball season actually sets you up for a stronger offseason.
So what does that look like?
- Take a full week off from throwing
- Hit pause on your strength training
- Step away from baseball-specific drills
Seriously, for one week: no ball, no bat, no lifting. Just let your system breathe.
Use that time to:
- Catch up on sleep
- Eat well
- Do stuff you enjoy outside of the game
This kind of break gives your body a chance to heal and your mind a chance to reset. You’ll come back more focused and more motivated.
Still Feeling Sore or Banged Up? Don’t Ignore It.
If you're dealing with lingering soreness, shoulder tightness, or elbow pain from the season, here's a hard truth:
Rest alone probably won't fix it.
What you need is targeted work: mobility, stability, maybe some specific rehab to clear up those nagging issues. That way, when it's time to hit the offseason program, you're not carrying last season's problems into your next chapter.
We see it all the time – athletes who push through pain during the season then take time off thinking it will just go away. But unless you address the real issue, it usually comes right back.
When You’re Ready, Build With Intention
Once that week is up, and you're feeling refreshed, then it's time to get after it. Start slow. Ease into your offseason strength and conditioning. The goal isn't to go full throttle on Day 1, it's to build a plan that supports your growth all winter long.
